Project Description

This unique and very modern home in California’s Gold Country was designed by adhering to only a few simple and elegant principles: to ensure privacy from neighbors and the road, and to visually connect every room of the house directly with a view of the Bear River gorge below. This intimate connection with the natural views became known as “The Prime Directive” from which all design decisions could be evaluated. To achieve these 2 goals, the house is shaped like a composite bow that sets its’ long axis nearly parallel to the river gorge and the sides splay out to “contain” the tension between the house and nature. All along the length of the house, each room has a unique and “personal” experience with the river valley.

When approaching the house, the views of the river are not visible and even the front door is hidden. A series of large rocks conserved from excavation, lead the visitor from the auto court through a slot in the face of the building, rounding a corner to the front door. The experience is akin to kayaking down the river gorge. Once inside, the spaces and their embrace of the river valley become primary.

The interior zones of the house allow for gathering and the separation of sleeping zones and work zones. A detached garage and workshop supports the maintenance needs of the owner, who is an avid cultivator and gardener.
